Shigure is a fictional character and major character who appeared in Ninja Scroll: The Series. She is the Light Maiden of the Hiruko Forces.

Personality[]

All her life, Shigure has lived in the mountains until her village was burnt to the ground by the Kimon People. Lost and confused, she doesn't know what to do until she meets Jūbei Kibagami, Dakuan and Tsubute and realizes that she must go to the village of Yagyū.

Shigure is known as the Light Maiden and is highly treasured by her people as well as the ninja chasing her. She is later revealed to actually be the lost treasure of an ancient kingdom itself possessing supernatural powers. She doesn't particularly enjoy being the Light Maiden, as all it brings her is an endless line of ninja trying to kidnap her. When she fully awakens to her powers as the Light Maiden, the first thing she does with them is to strip herself of those powers, leaving her a normal girl.

Shigure is a very gentle person who dreams of freedom and knowing the world outside his village from the very beginning. Shigure is first shown gazing at the sky, in which she envies the freedom a bird possesses while flying softly amongst the sky. After Jūbei is caught by Shigure in an arrow trap for trespassing, a small bird is hurt by this trap and is soon freed by Shigure out of mercy.

Appearance[]

Shigure is a young woman with black hair and brown eyes.

Biography[]

At the beginning of the series, Shigure is seen at a rather small village stationed atop a miscellaneous mountain. Day and night Shigure and her people enjoy peace, but she constantly enforces swordsmanship training as to ensure safety if ever attacked. Within the village, she is known as "Mistress Shigure" due to her rank. Shigure is being look after by the villagers, mainly by Genza who treats her as his adoptive daughter. Meanwhile, Shigure meets Jūbei Kibagami, who stops in their village for a while to rest.

After the sun had set in the evening, there had been the sudden arrival of a large iron beast named Gōten and another dangerous ninja named Ubume. To the surprise of Shigure, all of the villagers who she believes to be inept all threw off their average clothes and appeared in the uniform of a shinobi. Many upon many of Shigure's fellow villagers are all killed by this large monster, installing fear and despair into the heart of Shigure. After the whole village is set aflame and corpses lie commonly amongst the soil, Shigure is personally saved by Rōga, a mysterious man with a mask who called her by the name of "Light Maiden". This mysterious man was going to hand Shigure the sacred Dragon Jewel, but was not allowed to due to the sudden arrival of an enemy. Thus, Shigure is forced to flee from the chaos by running through a nearby forest for safety. With tears in her eyes, she experiences true distress and confusion.

During Shigure's flight, night soon turns to day and she happens to run into a mountain thief by the name of Tsubute. Shortly following this, Shigure would also run into Dakuan, who is a ninja priest. While at a current state of confusion, Shigure soon realizes what one of her fellow villagers had told her: "If trouble presents itself, go to Yagyū village." Thus, Shigure will travel with her two companions to Yagyū village. After Shigure is also attacked by Gōten that slaughtered her whole village, a ruse is soon formed which ends with the destruction of this foul beast.

Abilities[]

She trained a martial arts, but to her chagrin, her modest fighting skills are nothing for the other ninjas. She is established in the very first episode as a very competent fighter, but she is vastly outperformed by her own retainers and stops fighting during the rest of the series. Every time she have o draw her knife, she unfortunately goes down without throwing a slash.
